A Musical Beginning

My younger cousin (she's 24) is getting married to her high school sweetheart on December 30. I decided that I was going to write her a short poetry book (10 poems) with pictures throughout their relationship. I'm going to make it as a photobook from Shutterfly. My aunt will send me some pictures; here is the first poem I wrote for the book. It's a poem about the beginning of their relationship in 2009. She was a junior and he was a sophomore.

As the autumn sun quickly sets
against the gold and red leaves;
stars glittered in the sky met
and danced with his blue eyes.

Nearing Halloween, on this chilly night,
when the marching band took the field,
dressed in his best; caught her sight.
She continued her melody and he kept beat—

his drum beating matched the rhythm of his heart:
when the music subsided into football shouts
scooting next to her in the stands, a smile starts;
quiet introductions, compliments, questions begin

and conversation replaces the "hut, hut, hike, go!"
as the game ends, love begins to twinkle
under the Halloween moon where autumn winds blow;
their excitement fills their chatter and young hearts—
wondering without hesitation where their story will go.

I will share other poems as I write them. I hope she enjoys the book!

  1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

    I have returned to blogging, dear friend. Thank you very much for your kind and comforting words during my bereavement.

    I really enjoyed your poem about love's beginning and I am certain your cousin and her sweetheart will appreciate what you wrote and the book that you will present to them.

    Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend JM!

    1. Thank you, Shady. I wrote one other one and I need to work on some more this weekend. I'm thinking of using some general love poetry I wrote in the past as well. I only need 10 poems; I'll see what I can come up with.
