NaPoWriMo Day #16

And now for our prompt (optional, as always). Today I challenge you to take your inspiration like our featured interviewee did in the chapbook she co-authored with Ross Gay, from the act of letter-writing. Your poem can be in the form of a letter to a person, place, or thing, or in the form of a back-and-forth correspondence.

In most recent history,
as we begin to see;
Canada has become a beacon of hope
for refugees at the end of their rope.
As someone making her way in the world,
raising money for a move, my head twirls;
please accept this application
as a form of near supplication
I studied Arabic while in school, you see,
I would be an asset, not only over tea,
but to help refugees get around and teach
them that English and French aren't out of reach.
Though, you're already doing a wonderful job;
smiles and laughter instead of loud sobs--
I want to help, you see, I'm grateful
for this opportunity to leave the hateful.
I want to thank you for allowing me,
and I want to help those who brave the seas.

But, I should make my skills shine,
not only for refugees, they'll be fine:
I should show my best to everyone,
be myself, work hard, and have fun.
It'll be okay if I am just myself,
and pack that anxiety away on a shelf.

I was going through different contests that I could enter and came across a poetry fellowship. If I am selected, I could win $25,000. Here are the parameters: Poetry Fellowship. Do you think I should enter? Do you think my poetry is worthy enough?

  1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

    I enjoyed your assigned poem, especially when I reached this portion:

    I should show my best to everyone,
    be myself, work hard, and have fun.

    That is so key. Every day we should strive to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. Work hard. Play Hard. If we are creative enough we can turn all work into play, and that is how we spend our days... at play.

    I wish you a safe and happy week ahead, dear friend JM!

    1. Thank you, Shady! I love NaPoWriMo and creating each day. Though, today I am tired.

      Have a great week ahead as well, dear friend!
