Smells of Summer

Write your entry for today about a place that you have spent a considerable amount of time in--perhaps somewhere you lived or worked before--and whose smells are curiously linked with your recollection. Describe the emotions and events from that period that those smells conjure up, and the ways in which your memories may have been colored by your preference or distaste of those smells.

Vanilla wafts through the air. A vanilla smell, my favorite, and I can't wait to dig into my lactose free ice cream with the chocolate sprinkles. Nan has a banana split, her favorite, and she dips her spoon in right away. In the distance, I hear the goats baaing, the roosters crowing, and the kids ordering ice cream laughing. It's a hot day, but we sit under the umbrella and talk. I love summers and spending this time with Nan after I'm finished work. This has been a tradition for years and I savor the ice cream, the conversations with Nan, and the livestock playing. It's so much fun watching the livestock.

  1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

You really loved your Nan, and I enjoyed reading about some of your favorite moments spent with her eating ice cream and watching the livestock play.

Your writing challenge about the smells of a familiar place immediately brought to mind a job I had at age 18 working in a potato chip factory. The company made all varieties of chips including regular, bar-b-que and waffle chips, plus cheese popcorn and cheese twists. Can you imagine the aroma of those freshly made goodies? Best of all, the employees were allowed to eat as much of it as we wanted. We simply picked the hot snack products off the conveyor belt as they went by!

Thanks for sharing your memory, dear friend JM, and enjoy your weekend!

    1. Hi, Shady!

Yes! I miss Nan more and more every day. I wish I had pictures of some of the memories, but I remember them in my heart.

That sounds like a fun job! I can imagine it and smell the smells you smelled. I would love to have a job like that - maybe I will find a weekend job that involves food prepping and tasting. :)

Thank you, you too dear friend!
