Thankful Thursday 12/29/2016: A Year of Firsts

I can't believe this is the last Thursday of 2016! This year went by super fast and I have a lot to be thankful for. Yesterday someone posted that 2016 was a rough year, especially with all of the celebrity deaths, but I don't think 2016 was that horrible. Yes, there were some rough moments this year, but overall I say 2016 has been my best year in a long while. Andrew and a few other friends know the reasoning behind that.

I've had a lot of first moments this year. I held down a full-time job for a year and made some friends while I am on the job. I'm thankful for Brijae, Danielle, Cecilia, Kelly, Khadijah, and the few others still on the job and a few that have left. While it's not my favorite job, I'm thankful for the income as I work on my goals and dreams. I'm thankful for moments like these:

This year I also took a major test for immigration to Canada. While people would scream, "but English is your language! You majored in English!", this is a huge step for me. I have anxiety, especially testing anxiety. In the past, I would fail tests because of this anxiety. I bombed the SATs and had to enter college on special admissions because of that low test score. While I passed college with a 3.02 GPA, tests always were a struggle. I passed the IELTS exam with a score of 8.5. I speak English fluently with minor errors (nervousness). I passed and did well. I'm proud of myself.

Not only that, this will be my first time immigrating. I had my education assessed, applied for some jobs (will continue applying for more jobs in the new year), and tomorrow I have to send my fingerprints off to the FBI. They want to make sure I'm not a terrorist. The local police department gave me a free letter of recommendation to send off once I get the FBI report. I was super thankful for that.

I visited all new places this year and while I did meet up with friends, I also made new friends. It was nice visiting new places and seeing new faces. I am thankful for those opportunities. I also traveled a lot more this year than in years past.

Also, have to be thankful that people don't mind me taking pictures/ have the patience for it.

What are you thankful for this year?

  1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I am very happy to know that you consider 2016 one of your better years in recent memory. Not everyone can say that. You offered amble proof of why you will keep such fond memories of this past year. You traveled more than ever, made friends wherever you went and developed and maintained friendships with people all over the world. You held a steady job, won the admiration of co-workers and met the challenge of test taking as you prepared to move to Canada.

I hope 2017 will be an even better and more exciting year for you. I am thankful to count you among my close friends, to follow your adventures, to learn new things and see new places through the lens of your camera and to have you as a regular reader and commenter on SDMM.

Happy new year to you and your family, Jessica!
