A Year In Review: Polar Plunging for Charity - Plunging for the Brandywine Valley Association

In February I celebrated my fifth anniversary for plunging for the Brandywine Valley Association. I started plunging for the BVA in February 2011 after seeing an ad for the plunge in Sykes Student Union. Sykes was the commuter lounge for my university, West Chester University. I will admit, the cute little otter is what drew me in. It drew me in year after year. I've raised about $500 in the five years I was participating. I raised $100 this year.

February 20 was the day of the plunge. This winter was mild, the day was a balmy 50 degrees. It actually felt like a day at the beach, except there was some snow on the ground. We lucked out with the weather. The water was 34 degrees. Aunt Kathy came along with mom, dad, and I to cheer me on.

We had such a blast. I dressed up as a jellyfish and made honorable mention in the costume contest. I also made it to my chest in the water and won a t-shirt. It was just so much fun.

The making of my jellyfish costume:

From the Polar Plunge:

I am thankful that dad has been taking me to the plunges for the past five years. I am thankful for his support, as I am thankful for mom and Aunt Kathy's support.

Watch the blue and pink and silver tentacles float around you,
calmly, but do not provoke it with taunting and pokes!
Watch her as she glides and floats through icy water,
over and under snow patches and opalescent glaciers;
stars and the moon add a twinkle to her clear jelly,
sparkling along with the shimmering of the waves—
all is calm before summer rushes in with waves and tourists.

  1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I just realized that I have known you at least a year and a half now. It has been fun and very educational to follow your adventures. Nobody, but nobody, packs as many interesting experiences into a year as you do.

I remember the day of the polar plunge. You were very lucky the temperature was Florida mild. I also remember your cute jellyfish costume. I enjoyed the jellyfish poem you wrote.

Have a wonderful week, dear friend Jessica Marie!

  2. Hi Shady!

I know! Isn't that amazing? Time really does fly, especially in the work and blogging world. :)

We did luck out. I remember for three years in a row it was cold and snowy. I was numb when I came out of the water. Not so much this year, which I am thankful for. I love the cold, but I don't like the feeling of numb. I think Floridians would have loved participating in this. :)

They posted the date for the plunge in 2017. I have to see what dad wants to do, as he is the one that drives me to events. Hopefully!

Have a wonderful weekend, dear friend!
