Thankful Thursday 5/19/2016

I'm going to let my Grumpy Cat calendar sum up what I am thankful for today:

I'm also thankful for my friends, both online and face to face friends. As I posted yesterday, I wrote a poem about meeting one of my bear friends that I hope to meet one day. I wrote two poems about meeting Andrew, another friend I hope to meet some day. Here is one of them, one before we meet Mayor Khan. I wrote another poem today about the actual meeting, but left it at work. Let me share the one I have. I need a title:

A lovely day to finally meet Andrew,

bright, not a cloud in London’s sky, birds flew,

Canadian geese to be exact, overhead;

daunting cobblestone paths, stark gray, have led

every blogger, we’re not alone, to the Syrian café,

falafel and schwarma overwhelm our senses today.

Green peppers dot the plate, it’s nice to catch up,

hummus is then brought to our table, tea for our cups—

I tell him how excited I am to meet Mayor Khan,

“Jessica, I know, you blogged about it for weeks and fawned

knowing you will finally get to shake his hand.”

Laughing, in the background there is a Syrian band,

memories will be made, meeting Andrew face to face,

not only meeting Mayor Khan, or walking London’s pace,

on buses and trains as Andrew shows me the countryside;

purple irises, poplars, amber wheat like waves at high tide,

Queen Elizabeth loves traveling through here,

rolling the words and histories together, oh the tears;

strolling past Big Ben to this café past the town’s square,

tastes of London vary widely, a multicultural fare—

unexpected? Not really, it’s why Mayor Khan won,

vying against hatred, a small minority not weighing a ton.

We head right to the Parliament building, the sun bright,

xylophones played by children on the streets, what a sight!

Yet these are the things I imagine when chatting with Andrew,

zeal about meeting when I travel over the Atlantic Blue.

I'm going to send a copy of my book to Mayor Sadiq Khan.... thanks for the suggestion, Andrew! I just thought of this today: Sadiq's name has a meaning - sadiq is the Arabic word for friend. Mayor Khan's name literally means friend!

I'm also thankful for Acrassicauda. They sent me this DVD last week and it was signed! I really hope to meet them one day!

What are you thankful for today?

  1. Had this post open in a tab; think I did that to ensure I kept a copy of this poem. :)
