Thankful Thursday 1/21/2016

Hello and Happy Thursday! Welcome to another installment of Thankful Thursday brought to you by Musings of a Creative Writer.  It seems like there is a lot to be thankful for each week, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

Winter has finally arrived to the Philadelphia area! On Sunday when I was in the city, we had a surprise snow storm. It only left an inch, but it made Philadelphia look pretty. It was interesting sitting inside Cedar's and looking through the Middle Eastern arches to see snow falling. Sadly I didn't get a chance to catch a picture of it, but I wrote a sonnet about it today. Please let me know what you think about it because I want to put it in my book (I also need to think of a title):

Beyond the Gothic arches lie cities covered in snow,
I sit against the vibrant pillow watching snowflakes;
they dance from the gray sky much like the candles' glow--
I'm toasty with my meal, and for his sake
I dawdle, I just love watching from the arches.
While it's cold outside, I'm sipping my Arabic coffee,
and listening to the Arabic around me, my heart marches
to the winter beat outside, warmed by date toffee.
Yet, as he disappears outside of the arches, into white,
I'm still stuck in my Arabic textbook with lattice on the walls
and red, blue, orange, pillows; happiness from the bright
on a dreary day outside, yet both worlds call--
warm deserts and winter wonderlands that sprawl,
endless landscapes and night skies with star crawls.

The snow allowed me to capture some pictures as well. I love winter scenes, especially of cities:

On Saturday we're supposed to get a blizzard. The meteorologists are calling for a foot of snow; our first of the season. I look forward to the picture opportunities and I feel thankful we're getting a winter now. I feel thankful I can experience different seasons and the photo opportunities they bring. I feel thankful how snow brings people together too. When I was eating at Cedar's on Sunday, the owner talked to me for a good 15 minutes. His whole family was there and it was just a nice feeling. It's hard to explain, which I will talk more about this in my blog about the Academy/Cedars/Convenience Store Shopping Entry, but I feel thankful for the experience. I just feel thankful for the beauty that was Sunday.

I also feel thankful for my friends both online and offline. I'm making progress on my book and I am thankful for the encouragement my friends are giving me about telling my stories. I feel better about my poems and I feel better about my writing. I know my book will get finished at some point this year. I also feel thankful for the friends that are helping me proof my book.

What are you thankful for today?

  1. Hi, dear Jessica Marie!

I love cityscapes in winter! You captured some great shots of the light snow falling from gray skies over Philadelphia. Remember the great Elton John song (my favorite recording of his) "Philadelphia Freedom"? I enjoyed your sonnet. It reminds me of two winter songs that I love S&G's "A Hazy Shade of Winter" and "California Dreamin'" by the Mamas & the Papas.

If you are bracing for a foot of snow in the Delaware Valley, then it will probably accumulate to 16 to 24 inches in Lancaster and York. Stay safe and warm and have a wonderful weekend, dear friend JM!

    1. Hi Shady!

"California Dreamin'" is one of my favorites! I have it on my iPod and I'll have to listen to it tomorrow. :) Surprisingly, it's hard to capture light snow... I was struggling, but I am glad I did catch some.

That sounds about right for what Lancaster is expecting. D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and NYC are supposed to get the brunt of the storm. "Straight Outta Compton" came today and have something to watch. :D

Have a wonderful weekend too, dear friend Shady!

  2. I like your sonnet. Very good!

    1. Thank you, Janie. :) The book is coming along well and since the library is closed tomorrow for the impending blizzard, I'll be working on my book tomorrow! YAY!

    2. I think it's great that you're adventurous. I'm not at all.

    3. Thanks, Janie, I try to be. However, that restaurant is awesome and the staff is great - that's why I keep going back. :)
