National Poetry Write Month (NaPoWriMo) 2015

Today is the first day of National  Poetry Write Month or NaPoWriMo. National Poetry Write Month was started by the Academy of  American Poets found that months like Black History Month (February) and Women's History Month (March) were successful; and thus in April 1996, the Academy of American Poets declared April as the month to appreciate poetry, poets, and bringing poetry/the art of writing into the American classroom.

In the 19 years since NaPoWriMo began, the month has been successful. I like using the NaPoWriMo prompt site for poetry ideas. Here is my poem for the first day of NaPoWriMo:

And now, without further ado, our optional prompt. Today’s prompt is a poem of negation – yes (or maybe, no), I challenge you to write a poem that involves describing something in terms of what it is not, or not like. For example, if you chose a whale as the topic of your poem, you might have lines like “It does not settle down in trees at night, cooing/Nor will it fit in your hand.” Happy writing!

It does not rise in the morning, unless summoned;
surprisingly he does not snap at his handler's hand.
He does not like vegetables, fruits, or greens--
and his meals can't be too hot or too furry or too bland,
He normally doesn't like the too bright rays of the sun,
nor the nights where the moon's glow is on full blast.
It prefers not to fly into night's clouds, running from guns
nor foxes or whatever else will track him down for his demise;
even the car that hit him, couldn't destroy his life--
he does not nip or bite your hand, he is sweet and will rise!

    1. Thank you! Sam Adams stays with the Audubon Society. He was hit by a car on the highway here and is blind in one eye. I'm glad someone rescued him.
