National Blood Donation Month

January is National Blood Donation Month and although I've never donated blood (in high school, I was way too small; at 4'10 and 105 lbs, yeah - and well, I have always passed out), it's important if you can donate.

Why is Blood Donation Important?
Blood donation is important because we need a constant supply of blood for people who are in need. Even with all the advances in medicine and technology, blood can't just be made - the only way to get blood is through donation. By donating blood, we can save lives of people who were in an accident or transfusions or whatever.

Eligibility Guidelines:
Weight of at least 110 pounds
17 years of age or older (or parental consent under the age of 16)
Be in good general health or feeling well

According to the Red Cross Website (Blood Donation Eligibility):

Guidelines for Males for Double Red Cell Donors:
Be at least 5 ft. 1 in.
Weigh at least 130 pounds
Be healthy and feeling well
At least 17 or older in most states

Guidelines for Females for Double Red Cell Donors:
Be at least 5 ft. 5 in.
Weigh at least 150 pounds
Be healthy and feeling well
At least 17 or older in most states

If you meet the guidelines, please consider donating to save someone's life! Although I am not eligible to donate blood, I am an organ and bone marrow donor. Please consider donation!

  1. I used to donate. I don't know why I stopped. Probably had to do with medication...I assumed they wouldn't want my blood. I will check it out. I am an organ donor. Good post!

    1. I THINK there might be some places that ask what medications you're on or if you have certain conditions. I would call and ask, though, because I'm not totally sure.

  2. I don't think I've ever been able to donate due to poor health. The blood banks have been useful for certain previous episodes, so your post is good. Thank you!
