Alexander Calder's Ghost

I went to the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday and in the lobby, they have Alexander Calder's mobile titled Ghost on display. I wrote a poem about it. :)

Alexander's Ghost

translucent spectre

floats freely on the ceiling

everyone in awe.

Free-floating, suspended in air;

The statue, back arched, stares.

White tiles coupled with gray wire,

"ooh"s and "ahh"s never tire.

Below the spectre, awaits

hustling-bustling, lines straight

or curving in and out.

The droning and humming, the shouts--

another day in the city, away

from the heat and humidity, stay;

this ghost was created for you,

for Alexander lived here too.

The god father of mobiles,

illuminations of grays and teals,

reds, whites, blues and yellow--

such a colourful fellow.

This ghost will wait for you,

with magnificent stories too;

grab the pale white tiles;

let your imagination stay awhile.

It was so nice seeing James after two years of not seeing him. It was nice seeing Heidi too (the one directly above). It was just so nice catching up with everyone. I really enjoyed myself tonight. =]

Beginning of a Story

What do you think? Good concept? What should I call it?

"Hi coach," Ben sleepily said. He hated being dragged out of bed at 5am, but he knew he must do it for the team. But, why was he meeting with Coach McCarthy? A knot twisted his stomach.

"Good morning, Firestone," coach McCarthy paused and Ben noticed a slight sadness about him -- "I guess you know why you're here."

"No, coach" Ben whispered, "I guess it's not good news?"

"No. We have to cut you from the team. I'm sorry. You have such potential and I think you should finish college so a college coach can work with you to hone your skills."

Ben was devastated. His twisted gut proved him right.

"There's only so much a professional team is willing to work with. College coaches can work with it. We're the best players; in college you learn to become the best you can be."

"I understand, coach." Ben turned away from coach and headed back to his room to pack. He had to contain his tears; he wanted to work with the Packers.

"What if I didn't make it?" Ben said as he bit his nails. The waiting was killing him.

"Honey, don't talk silly. If you weren't good, you wouldn't be here," his mother reassured him.

"But, mom--"

"It's true, if you weren't good at football, we wouldn't be sitting here waiting. Be patient."

"Well, this happens from time to time," Ben meekly said as his confidence was beginning to wane. He had let out a sigh and breathed deeply to calm himself down. The tension in the room was thick, he could hardly breathe. His sister, Lily, his father and even his mother beyond the calm facade, were on edge and anxious for Ben. Like Ben, they were just as nervous.

"You still have a year left of college, son," his father said to break the brief silence that had filled the room.

"I know dad," Ben responded with a touch of irritability. This did not comfort Ben. He knew he had a year of school left, if he makes a team, he would be take online classes and have his degree mailed to him. He had it all planned out, he spent a year planning. It wasn't easy, either; it took several months and a lot of talking with administration to clear him from learning in person to online classes. Now, after all this work, he was unsure what would happen to him. Ben's stomach began to knot - he felt physically sick.

"Excuse me," he quickly said and runs to the nearest bathroom. He had shut the door and the toilet became his best friend for what seemed to be an eternity.

"Ben, honey, are you okay," his mother's voice muffled through the light knocks on the door.

"Yes, I'll be right out." Ben felt better; he washed his face with cold water and stepped out into the strained environment. "God, I wish they would call," Ben thought to himself.

I don't know if it was a box or a bag; the ringtone shocked Ben, but this is what he had been waiting for. He froze.

"Ben, why don't you answer," his mother whispered. Numb, Ben answered his cellphone with a simple "Hello."

"Ben Firestone?" The masculine voice barked through the phone.
"This is him."

"Congratulations," the voice sounded happy, "you have made wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers. You are twenty eighth pick."

Twenty-eighth pick, he was low on the totem pole, but he was happy he made a team. Green Bay Packers. He loved the Packers. He grew up watching Brett Favre gracefully run through end zones and launching into the goal line to make touchdowns. Brett Favre was his idol until he left abruptly for other teams. But, it was not only Brett Favre, Ben just loved the Packers.

"Please report to training camp on June Fifth." The voice broke his train of thought.

"Thank you, sir." The call ended.

"So," his mother asked with a tint of happiness and nervousness.

"Green Bay Packers."

"Honey! That's great! You made your team!"

"Congratulations, son," his father smiled.

"Congrats!" Lily also smiled.

"I report to training camp on June Fifth."

Arabic Children Story a Go

Yesterday while I was at work at the library, I talked to the director of the children's library and pitched my idea about an Arabic book for children. I told her my plans: a cat by the name of Amir will go on about his day describing things using his favorite colours; it essentially will teach children the colours in Arabic. She liked my idea and wants to see it when done. I have to get working. ^_^ I told her I had a few people willing to proofread as well, which reassured her.

She said I should really look into a career of doing this. Mayhaps.

Queen of the Road

Whenever I listen to King of the Road I can't help but relate to the free-spiritedness of this song. Speaking of being a free spirit and having a sense of adventure, I was looking at hotels for my 3 day stay in Milwaukee (I decided that I was just going to rent a cheap hotel my first night). I found one room for $84. Mom said Wyndams are good hotels, but the rating was 3. Reading some reviews, I am not sure. The others are $116/night, so $84/night is in my price range. There were some good reviews. Let me post the link:

I took out my nose ring to put the stud back in. To make a long story short the ring was magnetic and closed the hole partially. I had to take a straight pin to fully open it. Didn't hurt at all. Going to write a story now. =]

Congratulations to West Chester Class of 2012!

Congratulations to all graduates of West Chester University!

It was a little bittersweet for me; I was supposed to graduate, but health and change of major didn't help. It was sad to see most of my friends graduate. One wasn't in the loop and congratulated me and was surprised when I said I didn't graduate, so I explained. ::sigh:: December 2013 can't come soon enough.

Today I wrote two diatelles. A diatelle is a diamond-shaped poem with 15 lines, the syllable pattern 1/2/3/4/6/8/10/12/10/8/6/4/3/2/1, and the rhyme scheme a,b,b,c,b,c,c,a,c,c,b,c,b,b,a. I was inspired by this piece.

Here are my two:

Diatelle #1:

Riff-Crowned Lullaby
I drowned
in drum sounds
neon and smoke
in my brown eyes, it pounds,
like the beating of my heart, pokes
the guitar's riffs, the bass hums, forever spoke--
droning dives in and out--static--out and in; palm
catches the rhythm, the chords never shook.
It is hard to contain, my bloke,
love knows and shows no bounds--
lullabies took,
concerts wound;
smoke crowned--

Diatelle #2:

They flow
In and go,
Some last very long,
Love is all that they sew
They continue to stay strong.
However, rifts divide, but not so long;
Skirts, dresses, pants are forever on lend,
“please, please, please,” a forever lovely song—
Laughter and cheer is never wrong.
My friend, I love you so,
You will belong,
Always know,
No, no

What do you think?

Tuesday's Tea/ Christina's Surprise Party

Today I had tea with my three best friends. :) Christina's 21st birthday is next month, but she lives in Ohio; I surprised her today with a gift and the Lincoln Room provided the cupcake with the candle. She enjoyed herself.

Nan's birthday

Nan turned 89 yesterday. We took her to Legal Seafood to celebrate her birthday.

I will write a food piece/restaurant review later. May I add, the waiter was a doll (shame he was married though).

3 months to 8 day bliss

I booked my flight to Milwaukee yesterday morning, now I am waiting for payday to book my rooms. :)

The trip is really starting to come together nicely. ^_^
