Analyzation of Children's Lit

I love analyzing books -- I always have. I think during the semester I had a hard time completing my seven books for the annotated bibliography is because I'd sit there and analyze (which I learned people don't do). Most of the kids in my class are education majors; I am a writing major, so analyzing a text to a bloody, violent death is what I'm trained to do (especially since I want to write). So, I started my bib two weeks early (sorry Mahmoud, but you should expect it by now that childrens' lit takes up the fiber of my being and well, I need this a lot more than Arabic... I need this class to graduate) and analyzed some of the texts. I fell in love with this book: The Unfinished Portrait of Jessica by Richard Peck. It's on the list of modern fiction, but you could tell it was for the 11-14 year old crowd. I am going to post my analysis (Dr. Pflieger, if my blog shows up on the plagiarism radar, it's me Jessica and you can look at my profile):

Peck, Richard. Unfinished Portrait of Jessica. Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group: 1991.
Reeling from her father’s leaving, Jessica barricades herself into her room in spite of her mother, who kicked out her father. As Jessica mopes in her room, she thinks of her “father, this grown-up playmate” (8) for he was as the jacket describes him “a photographer who wears a flight jacket” unlike the other fathers who wear Brook Brothers or Joseph A. Banks suits. Jessica is named after a portrait that once hung “over the fireplace mantel, my grandmother’s picture had hung in a pool of light. It was always called the “Unfinished portrait of Jessica” (9). Later on, we learn that Jessica’s mother never wanted to name her daughter Jessica because as grandpa Lucius told Jessica, “you’ll never be pretty. Be glad of that. You have a chance at something better. I wish I’d be here when you are older” (115) and then Lucius compares Jessica to her name sake, “she was a beauty, as you know. She was a beautiful young woman and we didn’t meet until later” (117). This could be interpreted as Jessica’s own beauty isn’t finished as she is only 14 and has all her life to age and develop a beauty all her own—which could be in success, money or whatever her heart desires. However, her mother states when she gets back in banter back and forth after Jessica tells her mother about Margo and her mother knew Mr. Ferris had met someone with her own agenda. Jessica is shocked she knows, mother points to the mantel and states, “He had a mother rather like that—the original Jessica. You were named for her over my objections. I believe [she was beautiful] at one time. When I knew her, she was an old battle-ax. She’d been married years and years before Scott was born, and so he was the miracle son to her, and she spoiled him and ruined him. She wasn’t too happy to see me on her turf” (126). This could be analyzed as Jessica is nowhere near to the original Jessica because their personalities are the polar opposite in most ways, however, they both loved Scott dearly and hated to see him go. Jessica could have been named in hopes that she would carry the strength of the female Ferris’ or in spite of Jessica’s mom since she was not welcomed into the Ferris family. Thus, the unfinished portrait could be that Lucius never captured the whole of the original Jessica’s life and the ugliness behind her life (her shallowness) and could be why Lucius told 14-year-old Jessica that she might not be pretty, but she will never turn out shallow like the original Jessica.

Quote: “Then there was somewhere else. Some “no place” (89). This describes Jessica’s relationship with her father, he was often absent on photography trips and this trip to Mexico was no different. Jessica hangs out with Brooke and her boyfriend. Brooke is Margo’s daughter—both teens are a substitute for her father, like in the beginning there was another lady at the playground when she was younger. Margo takes care of Jessica when she is sick, not her father, leading Jessica to realize that her father cares about his work more than her and her mother is right: his mother Jessica ruined him and made him irresponsible.

65 Word Warmup

Because I feel really tired and bogged down with work, I started a 65 word warmup today. Once I am done everything tonight that is due tomorrow, I can add to it. I am thinking I will make it 250-500 words, but definitely no more than 500 words. I'm going for a creative flash non-fiction.  Shall be interesting.

The water’s edge sparkled in the hot July sun. Although we were in Luray, situated atop a mountain; the hot Virginia sun in the midst of July still burned and singed our skins. The crystal blue waters of the Shenandoah washed upon the rocky sand, soothing our hot and tired feet. In a matter of minutes, we would be traveling her depths into her unknown.

I'm feeling rather manic, I can't concentrate on anything and I can't sit still. :\

Anyway, today I'm thankful that today is a new day. :)

My Thanksgiving In Pictures/ Giving Thanks (Day 5)

Since learning how to play this beautiful song on the organ, while learning it, I couldn't help but think of South Park. This song is good for the Holiday Season. :)

From Thanksgiving Eve, my dad is asleep and our cat, Mimi, is sleeping next to him.

 Nan before dessert.

Zach and I.

Then last night I stayed at my aunt's house to watch the dogs. I think I converted my aunt's dog to be a Packers' fan... LOL. Well, I had her wear my hat:

And finally:

Today, I feel thankful just to be alive. There have been times where I wanted to end it all. I am thankful for all the nice people in my life who haven't abandoned me in spite of hard times. It still makes me tear up a little.

Today, I am finally no longer blond! I changed into my winter colour. :)

I am also on Amazon now! http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Through-Strawberry-Jessica-Cavaliere/dp/1466233931/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1322259573&sr=8-2

PACKERS 11-0!

The Packers are 11-0! A nice touch to Thanksgiving. Zach is still here and we're having a wonderful time with my family. :) I'm so glad he's been a friend for 8 years. Anyway, I have pictures of me from the game:

Happy Thanksgiving! (Giving Thanks: Day 4)

Happy Thanksgiving! Today I am thankful for my friends who have stood by my side no matter what -- through my ugly, through my good times and through my stable time. Today I am spending Thanksgiving with my family and a friend I've been friends with for 8 years and has looked beyond the flaws. It makes me cry in happiness that the friends that stood by me can look past it.

Thanksgiving Week (Giving Thanks 1)

I have been posting this in my support groups, but this can apply to everyone. We're often thinking about the negatives of life: how you don't have something, you don't make enough money, etc.,etc. Why not take a deep look into something we are truly thankful for and has made your life better. So, this Thanksgiving, let us give thanks in our own special ways!

Today I am thankful for the Packers and football. I know, I know, it sounds silly and weird, but football and the Packers have saved my life. It's something about it that connects me to other people, other Packers fans. By wearing my gear, I find there are many Packers fans on campus and make friends with people who appreciate the game as much as I do. Besides, having some form of entertainment is good for you. :)

I will have a poem later. Taking a quick break from writing (might take a nap).

If you want, dear readers, you can post.

The Prison Cell

Just a teaser from my book

Ice mixed with frost, the snow falls,
on the coldest, darkness nights
revealed a rose with many flaws.
The thorns that prick,
yet so subtle and beautiful,
quickly falling for its trick.
The beast that hides
in her snow covered kingdom,
anyone who enters slips and slides.
Yet, she doesn’t mind, not at all,
she covers what he believes to be
an ugly face, hideous with flaws
like the rose she leaves
for a person so fair and kind,
but who wants to stay amidst a cold breeze?
Auntie Beast, Auntie Beast, don’t hide,
Your flaws are only seen on the surface—
We all have them; the one who doesn’t slip and slide
Or find the cold breezes and snow
Bearable or at least tolerable,
Is this too good to be true, no?
But, yes, why hope with this pain,
Someone like them has been here before,
And my heart and face they did slain.
Take my hand, Auntie Beast,
And take this rose,
It is in the least
That it has thorns that sting,
Yet we don’t focus on that,
But the hidden beauty that sings—
Beauty is only skin deep
And subject, so ephemeral,
But in our judgment it does seep
And clouds every aspect of our life,
So much so, we forget the person inside
With grief and longing and strife
Are only seen on the outside,
Yet one judges by that,
When someone wants them on their side.
Yet, Auntie Beast opens her lock,
to the sun that looks to replace snow,
“but is this too good? Will there be shock
and horror? Should I trust?
She was comfortable in this abode,
away from a world that would bust,
at least, and break your heart at most—
yet, this Beauty seemed so nice
and it was nice to have someone to host.
Aunt Beast stands at this crossroad,
between the snow and ice and sun
that separates the world from her abode.

Cut the Pink Crap

Cut the Pink Crap
I Want the Authentic: On Being a Female Football Fan

Packers Party/Super Bowl Party

2011. The Packers made the Super Bowl granted they were playing against my third team—the Steelers. My #1 team playing my #3 team, lots of fun there. Naturally, I cheered for my Packers. What was the best way to show my Packers love and pride? Throw a Packers Party! And I went all out and thank goodness for Wegmans; they had Packers cupcakes and plenty for my four guests to have three cupcakes each! And the cupcakes had keepsake Packers helmet toppers, perfect for scrapbooking! As well as the balloon that I bought from Acme!
Yes, sounding like a typical female, I’m getting ready for a Super Bowl party. However, unlike the typical female, I will watch the game and enjoy it. That’s how my Packers party went—Christa, her fiancĂ©, Joe, nan and I sat and watched the Packers beat the Steelers. Joe routed for the Steelers, Christa was indifferent, nan and I were for the Packers. Mimi, my gray ragdoll cat, was even watching the game, which led me to the conclusion she also loves football. It was a nice party with Packers trivia before the game and during commercials, which Christa stated that when she and Joe went to see a Jets game, they still played commercials and the players just did whatever. I found that to be really cool (I wouldn’t see for myself until six months later). Then during halftime, Christa brought Apples to Apples and we played that as well as eat the Packers cupcakes, my green and yellow lemon cake, the chili and other yummy foods that were cooked. Great food, great friends and my favorite team playing, it was one of my favorite moments in 2011 (besides going to Green Bay, which will that tale will be next).

Hope to have my book done by Tuesday. :) I am writing a paper for my English theory class about female football fans via the gender lens, this story is for my book, but my prof. said I can quote this piece and site my book. :) I just have two more pieces to finish after this.

9-0!

Last night the Packers played. :) When I went to bed, there was 23 minutes of the game left (I had to be up early this morning, so sadly I couldn't watch the whole thing of Monday Night Football that started at 8:30), the score was 31-7. When I woke up this morning, they beat the Vikings 45-7. They gave them a whooping. ^_^ 9-0! This makes me so happy. :)

Christmas Card Thinking

Card I want to send

I belong to Snapfish and I love their products. I have to see if I can get less than 20 cards because I want to send this one to close friends. I was thinking that for the pictures, I can include pictures I have with them that was taken in 2011 (some would have to be 2010) to show what their friendship means to me. I want to ask if I can get 10 cards instead. What do you think? Do you think it could be a good idea?

Inner Beauty

  •

As you all know, 8 months ago I lost my friend Jim. My book will be done by Friday (no ifs, ands or buts) and I e-mailed his sister asking about the pictures she said she would send over months agofor my essay for my book. It's understandable that she's busy; I just kindly reminded her and said my book is being sent off to be printed on 11-18. I hope she doesn't think I am rude. :X
Since this tragedy, I've been talking to one of Jim's friends. He doesn't have a picture posted, but I like him -- he's really sweet. I was chatting with him this morning:

    • It's okay, it's pretty much out in tthat I have bipolar disorder. For the longest time my mom didn't want me medicated (I am now, but she still is in denial and resistant) and I was in my mixed state and he told me I needed help. Being really irritable and not on medicine besides the antidepressant at the time (I found out, you really shouldn't take an antidepressant if you have bipolar disorder), we fought about that. :\:\

So, is it possible to like someone whom you've never seen before? Maybe it's because I am losing everyone left and right that I am just getting ridiculous. :(
